Identify training needs

The training cycle below is a model or framework for how to plan, implement and evaluate training in a systematic way.  This cycle helps trainers identify the sequence or steps they need to take when training people.   Key steps are:

  • Identify training needs
  • Design and planning of the training
  • Delivery of training
  • Assessment
  • Evaluation

Identify the training needs

Identifying training needs involves gathering information from several sources, the main ones being:

  • Organisational records, e.g. performance appraisal
  • Interviews with managers, staff or volunteers.

The aim of training needs analysis is to fill that gap.  The gap can be measured as shown in the diagram below:
