What is learning?
Learning is gaining knowledge or skills through study, experience or being taught. The effect of learning is that the learner is able to understand or do something that she or he previously was not able to do. Learning is therefore a process of changing capability.
Learning Styles – VAK Learning Style
People learn in various ways. Learning styles indicate the most effective methods of instruction for various types of learners. The VAK learning style uses the three main sensory receivers: Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic (movement) to determine a person’s dominant or preferred learning style.
Three distinct learning styles are:
- Visual
- Auditory
- Kinesthetic
Although everyone learns in all of the styles each person does have a dominant learning style. Trainers should recognise the various styles and present material that stimulate learning in all three styles.
Visual learners:
- Pictures, illustrations
- Step by step charts with pictures
- Videos presentations
- Reading diagrams & handouts
Auditory Learners
- presentations/talks
- verbal instructions
- discussions
- videos
Kinesthetic Learners
- Practical, hands-on
- Movement
- Experiments
- Role playing
